For the second year in a row, ECSTATIC Summer will continue the surprising musical match-making that has become a hallmark of the ECSTATIC Music Festival, hailed as “the most bracing combinations of adventurous, fulfilling music in recent memory” by National Public Radio’s Joel Harrison. The series is presented by Arts Brookfield and curated by New Amsterdam Presents in association with Kaufman Music Center as part of the River To River Festival.
Bringing together musical innovators from the indie, pop, jazz, and classical realms, ECSTATIC® Summer will showcase eight world-premiere compositions from Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), Reggie Pace (Bon Iver), Dave Douglas, Susie Ibarra, Seth Olinsky (Akron/Family), People Get Ready, Holly Herndon, and Son Lux.
Part concert and part “happening,” the works will be presented over the course of two site-specific acoustic sets each night; one devoted to brass instruments and the other dedicated entirely to percussion. The festival will feature a wide variety of percussionists, with Mantra Percussion (“…an ethereal aura of sound”, Philadelphia Inquirer) forming the core, and on the brass side, TILT Brass (a “vivacious inventive new-music ensemble”, New York Times), who are appearing as part of their “Tilt 10″ 10th-anniversary celebration.
“More than a mere concert, ECSTATIC Summer represents the creative spirit that has always made New York City a mecca for new music,” said Debra Simon, Vice President and Artistic Director of Arts Brookfield. “People who come to this year’s ECSTATIC Summer will leave Brookfield Place knowing they have experienced something truly unique and special.”
Last year’s inaugural ECSTATIC Summer featured Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, disco-revivalists Escort, and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang. The New York Times noted in a review of last year’s concert that “composers whose styles are usually worlds apart collaborated on a program that gave the impression that they were of a single mind.”
Following the Saturday night concert, an afterparty will be hosted by “ping-pong social club” SPiN New York (48 E. 23rd St., New York, NY), who are providing ping-pong tables for use in Seth Olinsky’s composition. A DJ set by People Get Ready begins at 9 PM.
With funding provided by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
